Football » Great American Rivalry Series Presents: Byrnes vs. Gaffney
Byrnes vs Gaffney (SC) pits THE two South Carolina powerhouses, costing each other numerous regional and state titles. The first game was played in 1970, but has not been played simultaneously due to region and division shifts. Since 2006, they have remained on each other's record. A big highlight was last years' game, a rematch of the 2011 state championship won by Byrnes, in which Byrnes (then #3 in the nation) were knocked off by a late TD, pushing Gaffney ahead 22-18. Gaffney would go on to defeat Byrnes in the playoffs again and win the state championship. The rivalry came to a boiling point in 2006 when Gaffney upset Byrnes in the playoffs, stopping them on their way to their fifth straight state championship. The two schools combine for 27 state championships (Gaffney with 16, Byrnes has won 8 out of the last 11 years). Pro Bowler Sidney Rice once played in this game for Gaffney, as well as National Freshman of the Year Marcus Lattimore, a Byrnes alum.
