It was a beautiful night for football at Harris Field in Homestead, FL. The stands were packed for the 2011 edition of the annual Homestead/South Dade game, two schools that have combined to put dozens, if not hundreds, of players in the NFL. And by the looks of it, there might have been a few future stars on the field this 11/11/11.
South Dade struck first with a touchdown at the 3:02 mark in the first quarter. They looked primed to take control of the game midway through the second quarter as they had the ball deep in the redzone. Unable to capitalize, the Buccaneers had to settle for a field goal, making the score at the half 10-0 in favor of South Dade.
Homestead’s coach, Bobby McCray, must have had a spirited discussion with his troops at the half, because they came out motivated. To start the second half, the Broncos connected on a huge pass play that set up a touchdown to quickly bring the score back to 10-7.
To start the fourth quarter, South Dade was faced with field position deep in their own territory. The ensuing punt was picked up on the bounce by Rivalry Series MVP #5 Herb Waters and taken into the endzone for a touchdown. That exciting score made the score 14-10, Homestead. The Broncos picked up a late pick 6 to make the final score Homestead 20-South Dade 10.
