The 2011 edition of the St. Edward/St. Ignatius rivalry was played in front of a capacity crowd at Lakewood Stadium. And the over 10,000 in attendance were treated to a knockdown, drag out, fight.
The first quarter displayed two defenses with “bend but don’t break mentalities.” As both teams had several promising drives stymied. St. Edward managed a field goal to make the score 3-0 after the first quarter.
St. Ignatius added a field goal of its own, on the first play of the second quarter. St. Edward dominated much of the second quarter and went to halftime with a 10-3 advantage.
The second half started with a St. Ignatius three and out. The ensuing punt was fumbled by St. Edward and the Wildcats capitalized in a big way, converting the turnover into a touchdown to knot the score at 10-10. St. Edward threw an interception on their next possession and St. Ignatius converted that INT into yet another touchdown. In 5 minutes of play, St. Ignatius went from 7 points down, to 7 points ahead. To St. Edward’s credit, they rose to the challenge and matched with a touchdown on their next possession sending the contest into the fourth quarter knotted at 17-17.
St. Ignatius added a field goal in the fourth quarter and their defense held strong. The result was a St. Ignatius victory 20-17, providing a nice bit of momentum heading into the playoffs.
