Brookwood 23-Parkview 19

October 22, 2011
Great American Rivalry Series

by Kristen Parker

It was a great match-up, literally, from start to finish between the Parkview Panthers and the Brookwood Broncos in Snellville, GA. The contest started with Brookwood fumbling the kick-off and Parkview taking possession. Brookwood took over and missed a field goal, then got the ball again and made the field goal after not being able to make the touchdown after a long drive downfield.

Parkview took over in the 2nd quarter with long passes to Chris Carson leading to first downs. Avoiding a turnover after a fumble with a quick recovery, the Panthers drove downfield and scored. The extra point attempt was blocked by #28 Josh Brown from the Broncos, so with 8:50 left in the half the score was 6-3 Parkview.

The rest of the second quarter was a defensive battle with Brookwood's defense getting a lot of work. With two minutes left in the half, Brookwood had the ball on their own 45. Parkview came close to intercepting, but neither team was able to put more points on the board as the half came to a close with the score remaining Parkview 6-Brookwood 3.

Brookwood came out strong in the 3rd quarter, with #10 DJ Brown scoring the touchdown. The extra point give Brookwood a 10-6 lead.

A defensive battle kept the score at 10-6 through the rest of the 3rd quarter and all the way until the final four minutes of the game, when offenses on both team broke loose. The scoring frenzy began with a Parkview interception and 65-yard run for a touchdown and extra point, putting the Panthers ahead 13-10.

Within seconds, Brookwood's #15 BJ Salmon ran downfield for 45 yards to put the Broncos back on top at 17-13.

Parkview quickly shot back with a touchdown pass to #23 Chris Carson. Brookwood blocks the extra point and Parkview leads 19-17 with only 32 seconds remaining in the game. The Panthers had victory as they kicked off to Brookwood, only to watch the Broncos run the entire length of the field to take home a 23-19 victory and the Great American Rivalry trophy.

What a finish to a classic Rivalry game, with 27 points scored in the last two minutes!
