Good food, amazing people, and great football marked this thrilling Great American Rivarly game between Coldwater and Delphos St. Johns'. Last night's game featured two long-time MAC rivals who have battled for the league title year in and year out for several years. Without a question the greatest league in Ohio, with Delphos St. Johns a six-time state champion, including last year when Coldwater was state runner up in another division. Four times it has worked out that both schools were playing for state championships in the same year. This year's game can go down as a heart-throbbing triller to the end that would have had anyone on the edge of their seat. The game started off with turnovers, withDelphos throwing an interception on just the second play of the game. Coldwater capitalized on the turnover with a 40-yard touchdown reception by Josh Huber. Coldwater added a 43-yard field goal to take the score to 10-0 for the first quarter. This didn't stop St Johns from fighting back and taking back the lead 14-10 with a couple of rushing touchdowns by Jordan Bergfield. The second half started out with turnovers and drops by the Coldwater team. Both teams battled hard all the way to the final whistle, but it was Coldwater with a late passing touchdown by Austin Bruns to game MVP, wide receiver Caleb Siefring, with a mintue left to take the lead 17-14. A last-second interception sealed the victory for The U.S. Marines presented the MVP medal to Siefring and the Championship Trophy to Coldwater. All around, an amazing game and great people.
