It was standing room only for Gonzaga vs. Georgetown Prep, with a stadium that seats 1000 but with 6000 ticketholders! The sky was cloudy and the temperature was only 60, but the atmosphere was electric. Everyone was excited for this great battle! After the scholarship award was presented, the rain stopped and the teams were ready for kickoff.
After intercepting a Gonzaga pass on the first play from scrimmage, Georgetown Prep drove 8 plays for a 32-yard field goal for 3-0 lead. A 6-yard touchdown run at the end of a 12-play, 72-yard drive put Georgetown ahead 10-0 at the end of the 1st quarter.
With 5:22 left in the first half, Georgetown quarterback Tre Johnson threw a 25-yard touchdown to #30 Joel Chapman, making it 24-0, followed by another touchdown after 3 downs by Gonzaga making the score 31-0, Georgetown. Gonzaga finally got on the board with 1:15 left in the half, making the score 31-7 Georgetown as the teams headed to the locker rooms.
Gonzaga capitalized on a Georgetown fumble to start the second half and drove 72 yards in 9 plays to scored with a 19-yard touchdown pass by quarterback Chris Schultz to tight end Jimmy O’Brien, cutting the Georgetown lead to 31-14.
On a 3rd and 1 Gonzaga recovers a fumble, giving them 1st and ten at the Prep 15-yard-line. Gonzaga threw an interception to stop the Gonzaga momentum.
Georgetown Prep's Troy Vincent took it in from 3 yards out, making it Georgetown 38-17 with 7:15 left in the game. With 3:59 to go, Gonzaga chalked up the games last score with a 60-yard touchdown pass to make the final score 38-24, Georgetown.
Georgetown avenged last year's home defeat with the win.
