May 20, 2009

What a great rivalry that began in 1988 when this was the first football game ever played at the Hoover Metropolitan Stadium “The Met” now called Regions Park. A minor league baseball field converted to a high school grid iron. This game was celebrated as “20 years at The Met”. The game was all about bragging rights as the 5 time state champion Hoover Buccaneers, with new coach Josh Niblett, came in ranked 5th hoping to knock off the favored Mountain Brook Spartans ranked 3rd. Over 9000 fans packed Regions Park to witness this cross town rivalry game.

It came down to the last play of the game but Hoover prevailed in this barn burner 28-21. The Hoover “D” stopped Mountain Brook on their last drive with just over a minute left on the clock. This night was all about special teams as the play of the Hoover secondary really won the game. Defensive back Justin Sly was named MVP as his performance helped secure the win for the Bucs. But cornerback Antwan Williams also shined as he blocked a punt and returned it for a touchdown. Senior quarterback Simon Propst was 12 for 20 with 178 yards and one touchdown. Unfortunately for Mountain Brook, it was the 12th consecutive loss to Hoover.
