Gonzaga controlled the field and the game for most of the first quarter and scored first. With the help of eventual game MVP Daniel Wright and Black Monroe, St. John's was able to answer the Eagles' touchdown, tying the game 7-7. Wright then ran for 29 yards picking up a first down and was able to move the ball up the middle to give St. John's the lead 14-7. Both teams were scoreless in the third quarter, but St. John's turned it on during the fourth. Wright, playing both offense and defense for the Cadets, became too much for Gonzaga to handle. With Wright leading the team, St. John's scored two more touchdowns before the clock ran out, winning the game 27-21.
