Week 7 GAME OF THE WEEK: Parkersburg vs. Parkersburg South

October 11, 2010
Great American Rivalry Series

For the first time in the history of the Great American Rivalry Series, select contests have been designated as The Great American Rivalry Series "Game of the Week." These games will be featured via LIVE video webcast, allowing high school enthusiasts across the nation and service men and women around the world the chance to witness high school football at its best just by logging on to our website.

This weekend's Game of the Week is slated for Friday, October 8, at 7:30pm as Parkersburg takes on Parkersburg South. This game is considered by many to be the biggest rivalry game in West Virginia.

Friday's winning team will not only earn bragging rights but also the coveted Great American Rivalry Series Champion trophy. The Most Valuable Player will be selected by media in attendance, and the Series will award a college scholarship to the top student-athlete from each school. Students and fans actively participate in the rivalries as well through various challenges and competitions
.

The scholarship winner from Parkersburg South is Mark Swisher, 3-year letterman and captain of the football team. He is also a letterman with the 2010 State Championship wrestling team and was named All OVAC academic team in 2009. He is being recruited by Ivy League schools but wants to attend WVU and major in computer engineering. From Parkersburg, the winner is John Carter. John plays offensive lineman and special teams.

The Great American Rivalry Series emerged from a desire to celebrate the cultural phenomenon of Friday night high school football, shining the spotlight on classic gridiron clashes where expectations are sky high and die-hard fans abound. Since 2004, the Series has spotlighted 161 games and 116 unique rivalries in 34 states. New states we'll be visiting this fall are Maine, Utah, Vermont, and Arkansas, bringing the total by the end of the season to 38 states since the Series began.

Congratulations, Parkersburg and Parkersburg South, for your selection as our GAME OF THE WEEK!
