CANTON, OH – One of biggest rivalries in the country continues when the Canton McKinley Bulldogs take on the Massillon Washington Tigers in the annual “War of 1894” on Saturday at 2 p.m. (EST) at Fawcett Stadium. Upwards of 18,000 fans are expected for a game that’s part of the 2013 Great American Rivalry Series presented by the U.S. Marine Corps and Hibbett Sports.
The oldest, continuously-played rivalry in Ohio is considered the No. 1 rivalry in the country by Rivals.com. They have combined for 34 state titles, 11 national championships, are ranked No. 1 and 2 with wins in Ohio and are ranked in the top 10 in wins nationally. Massillon Washington leads the all-time series 66-52-5, having won twice last season (37-29 in the regular season and 28-19 in the Division I regional semifinals).
Once again, both teams have had great seasons. The Todd Filtz-coached Bulldogs are 9-0 and ranked high in the state, while the Jason Hall-coached Tigers are 7-2. The Bulldogs beat Boardman 47-0 in their last game and the Tigers lost to St. Vincent-St. Mary.
