2014 Rivalry Series
PREVIEW: Murphy vs. McGill-Toolen (AL)
October 22, 2013Great American Rivalry Series
MOBILE, AL – The color of the canon is on the line when the Murphy Panthers face the McGill-Toolen Yellow Jackets in the annual “Battle for the Canon” on Friday at 8 p.m. (EST) at Ladd-Peebles Stadium. More than 10,000 fans are expected for a game that’s part of the 2013 Great American Rivalry Series presented by the U.S. Marine Corps and Hibbett Sports.
The winner of one of the oldest rivalries in Alabama (dating back to 1935) gets to paint the downtown canon in its school’s color – blue for Murphy and orange for McGill-Toolen. McGill-Toolen won last season’s matchup 50-21 and leads the all-time series 47-33-1.
The Panthers, coached by Ronn Lee, are 6-2 after a 59-40 loss to Alma Bryant, their second straight loss after winning their first six games. One more win surpasses their total from last season. Junior dual-threat quarterback DePriest Turner has thrown for over 1,200 yards and 15 TDs and has rushed for over 900 yards and nine more scores.
After going 12-1 last season, the Yellow Jackets are 7-1 in 2013 after a 45-14 beatdown of Baker. Coach Bart Sessions’ team is paced by senior quarterback Harry Satterwhite (1,590 yards and 18 TDs) and senior back Ito Smith (854 yards and 16 TDs).
