CARY, NC -- Defense won it for Cary on Friday night.
The Cary Imps turned two fourth-quarter turnovers into scores and rallied for a 27-15 win over the Apex Cougars at Cooper Field. More than 6,000 fans came out to witness a game that was part of the 2013 Great American Rivalry Series presented by the U.S. Army and Hibbett Sports.
Trailing 15-14 with just over eight minutes left, the Imps forced a fumble that led to the go-ahead score then intercepted a pass that led to another. Trevion Hackney scored the game-winning TD on a 23-yard run to be named the Great American Rivalry Series Most Valuable Player.
Isaiah Gibbons then scored with 29 seconds left to seal it. He ran for 117 yards for Cary, which has now won five straight in the series between schools only six miles apart.
Tim Darcelien scored twice -- including a 33-yard run -- for the Cougars, who have lost six straight overall.
Cary (3-4) is at Fuquay-Varina next Friday night, while Apex (2-6) is at Panther Creek the same night.
