LAKEWOOD, OH – The annual “Holy War” is upon us, as the St. Edward Eagles take on the St. Ignatius Wildcats on Saturday at 7 p.m. (EST) More than 13,000 fans are expected at Lakewood First Federal Stadium to witness a game that’s part of the 2013 Great American Rivalry Series presented by the U.S. Marine Corps and Hibbett Sports.
St. Ignatius has won six of the last eight – despite losing 20-13 last season – and leads the all-time series 27-22-1. The winner of the rivalry receives the newly-created Safety Forces Trophy that honors graduates from both schools working in public safety.
The Eagles, coached by Rick Finotti, went 11-1 last season and lost to Mentor 63-56 in the second round of the state playoffs. The No. 1-ranked team in the state and a top-10 team nationally is currently 6-0 and has beaten every one of its opponents by at least 16 points, including a 41-14 win over Cardinal Mooney in its last game.
After going 11-2 last season and losing to Mentor 57-56 in the state quarterfinals, the Wildcats are 4-3 after a 32-29 loss to Eastern Christian Academy in their last game. They are coached by Charles Kyle.
