LOUISVILLE, KY -- Trinity made history on Friday night.
The Trinity Shamrocks beat the St. Xavier Tigers 29-17 in front of a crowd of over 25,000 at Papa John's Cardinal Stadium. The game was part of the 2013 Great American Rivalry presented by the U.S. Marine Corps and Hibbett Sports.
It was the Shamrocks' seventh straight win over the Tigers -- the longest in the series' history. The longest had been six straight from 1987-92 by the Shamrocks. The Shamrocks lead the series 37-36-2.
Quarterback Reggie Bonnafon and back Donald Brooks led the way for Trinity. Bonnafon threw for 215 yards and two TDs, while Brooks ran for 114 yards and two scores and also caught a TD. He was named the Great American Rivalry Series Most Valuable Player.
Austin Davis ran 17 times for 99 yards and a TD for St. Xavier, which kept it close throughout.
Trinity and St. Xavier have won a combined 34 state titles with Trinity's 22 the most in state history (three straight).
Both teams are back in action next Friday night, as Trinity (3-3) is at DuPont Manual and St. Xavier (4-3) hosts Male.
