ABILENE, TX -- It was all Abilene Cooper on Friday night.
The Abilene Cooper Cougars destroyed the Abilene Eagles 56-31 in the annual "Crosstown Showdown" at Shotwell Stadium. More than 15,000 fans attended the game that was part of the 2013 Great American Rivalry Series presented by the U.S. Army and Hibbett Sports.
The Cougars led 49-0 before the Eagles made the final score somewhat respectable. The Cougars, who have lost eight of the last 10 against the Eagles, lead the all-time series 32-20-1.
Quarterback Lorenzo Joe, a Texas commit, was named the Great American Rivalry Series Most Valuable Player. He threw for 203 yards and three TDs and ran for 83 yards and two TDs. Trey Dye, a BYU commit, ran for 174 yards and two scores and Skylar Wilson ran for 118 yards.
Quarterback Derek Scott threw for 282 yards and two TDs for the Eagles, while Trey Dennis caught seven balls for 145 yards and a score.
Abilene has 12 straight seasons with at least eight wins while Cooper has five.
Cooper (4-2) hosts Midland Lee next Friday night, while Abilene (1-5) is at Midland the same night.
