LOUISVILLE, KY – One of the biggest and best rivalries in the country continues when the Trinity Shamrocks take on the St. Xavier Tigers on Friday at 8 p.m. (EST) at Papa John’s Cardinal Stadium. A crazy 40,000 fans are expected for a game that’s part of the 2013 Great American Rivalry Series presented by the U.S. Marine Corps and Hibbett Sports.
Trinity and St. Xavier have combined for 34 state titles. Trinity has 22, which is the most in state history, and won one every year this century with the exception of 2004 and 2009. St. Xavier has won 12, its last two coming in 2004 and 2009.
The all-time series is currently tied at 36-36-2 with the Shamrocks winning the last six (by a combined score of 215-40), including last season’s 34-7 and 15-14 wins. The two teams have met in the playoffs seven of the last eight years.
Trinity is coming off a 13-1 season in which it destroyed Pleasure Ridge Park 67-7 in the Class 6A title game. But this season has been much different, as coach Bob Beatty’s team is 2-3 after a 35-30 win over Indianapolis Cathedral. Two of Trinity’s three losses have come to nationally-ranked teams (Ensworth and Colerain).
St. Xavier went 8-5 last season under Wil Wolford and are off to a 4-2 start this season after a 27-13 win over Central in its last game.
