PALISADES PARK, NJ -- St. Joseph Regional's defense came up huge on Saturday night.
The St. Joseph Green Knights recorded six sacks and had five interceptions, manhandling the Bergen Catholic Crusaders 49-6 at Overpeck Park Complex. More than 7,000 fans attended the game that was part of the 2013 Great American Rivalry Series presented by the U.S. Marine Corps and Hibbett Sports.
Jason Giles-Harris and Mark Fossati each returned interceptions for TDs for the Green Knights, who are ranked No. 1 in the state and are top 15 nationally. Giles-Harris and Devin Cividini each recorded two picks.
Along with Fossati's 34-yard interception return for a TD, he also blocked a punt (which was recovered by Giles-Harris in the end zone) and caught a 9-yard TD pass. He was named the Great American Rivalry Most Valuable Player.
Quarterback Spencer Aukamp threw for 247 yards and two TDs, while Sherman Alston (Boston College) ran for 86 yards and a score for the Green Knights, who are looking to win their third straight state title.
Corey Russo scored and Michael Martinez caught three balls for 72 yards for the Crusaders, who came into the game having played three out-of-state teams (all of which won state titles last season).
St. Joseph Regional (3-0) is at Wayne Hills on Friday night, while Bergen Catholic (1-3) hosts St. Peter's Prep on Saturday night.
