HYATTSVILLE, MD -- DeMatha did something that hadn't been done in awhile on Friday night.
The top-ranked DeMatha Stags handed the Our Lady of Good Counsel Falcons their first shutout loss in 13 seasons after a 21-0 win at DeMatha High School in front of over 6,000 fans. The game was part of the 2013 Great American Rivalry Series presented by the U.S. Marine Corps and Hibbett Sports.
The Stags' win snapped a four-game losing streak to the Falcons, who have lost two straight Washington Catholic Athletic Conference after winning 23 straight.
Cameron Phillips, a Virginia Tech recruit, returned an interception 97 yards to be named the Great American Rivalry Series Most Valuable Player. Wisconsin commit Taiwan Deal added a 95-yard TD run for DeMatha, which got its biggest win the series since 2008..
DeMatha (5-1) hosts Bishop O'Connell next Saturday night, while Our Lady of Good Counsel (3-3) is at Bishop McNamara the same night.
