September 9, 2013Great American Rivalry Series
FOLEY, AL – Could this be the year the Foley Lions finally end their losing streak to the Daphne Trojans? We’ll find out on Friday at 8 p.m. (EST) when the two teams meet at Foley High School in front of more than 6,000 fans for a game that’s part of the 2013 Great American Rivalry Series presented by the U.S. Marine Corps and Hibbett Sports.
The Lions haven’t beaten the Trojans since a 16-14 win back in 2007, a stretch of six games. And since 1992, the Trojans hold a 17-6 edge in the all-time series. They won 46-45 last season.
Foley is coming off an 8-4 season under coach Todd Watson in which it reached the playoffs for the eighth straight time and return plenty of talent. The senior receiver duo of Demarcus Bingham and Valontai Adams returns. Bingham is being recruited by the likes of Alabama, Auburn and Cincinnati, while Adams is being recruited by Alabama, Auburn, Mississippi State and Missouri. Either junior Tyler Cameron or sophomore Brax Garrett will be tossing them the ball.
Daphne also finished 8-4 last season, losing in the playoffs to eventual state runner-up Opelika. Glenn Vickory’s team lost two-year starting quarterback T.J. Fleeton, whom senior Zachary Morgan will attempt to replace.
Foley beat Alma Bryant 20-12 in the opener and crushed Robertsdale 47-7 behind junior back Felix Jones’ three scores.
Daphne lost to Spanish Fort, last year’s 5A state champion, 19-17 in the opener but bounced back with a 36-6 win over Baldwin County behind senior back Wheylen Tolbert’s two TDs.
