2012 Rivalry Series
PREVIEW: Hamilton vs. Brophy AZ
September 3, 2013Great American Rivalry Series
CHANDLER, AZ – The Hamilton Huskies and the Brophy Broncos will meet on Friday at 10 p.m. (EST) More than 12,000 fans are expected at Hamilton High School in a game that’s part of the 2013 Great American Rivalry Series presented by the U.S. Marine Corps and Hibbett Sports.
The Huskies, coached by Steve Belles, are ranked 18th nationally by MaxPreps.com after finishing last season 12-2 and winning the AIA Division I state championship. They are projected to repeat after returning eight players who’ve already received Division I offers.
Hamilton has won seven titles in the last 15 years and has a 183-17 record since 1998 with no more than two losses in any season.
Leading the way for the Huskies are senior quarterback Sammy Sasso, back Tyrell Smith, receivers Elijah Williams and Frankie Bueno and Casey Tucker, who is one of the most sought-after offensive lineman in the country.
The Broncos are also coming off a very good season, finishing 11-3 and reaching the AIA Division I state semifinals. It was their fourth straight season of at least making it to the quarterfinals. It may be hard for them to keep that streak going as they will play what is considered one of the hardest schedules in the state.
Also compounding matters is that Brophy graduated most of its talent, including six players who have gone on to play at Division I schools. Washington State-bound quarterback Tyler Bruggman (2,803 yards and 33 TDs), Oregon-bound receiver Devon Allen (1,000 total yards and 14 TDs) and back Marche Dennard (1,381 yards and 17 TDs) are coach Scooter Molander team’s biggest losses.
So leading the Broncos are senior quarterback Brian Woodward and senior back Will Edwards (433 yards and 9 TDs).
Brophy upset Desert Mountain last Friday night, getting two key turnovers to hold on for a 13-6 win, while Hamilton took care of Eastlake 28-17.
