2012 Rivalry Series
PREVIEW: Arkansas (AR) vs. Texas (TX)
September 3, 2013Great American Rivalry Series
TEXARKANA, AR – The long-time rivalry between sister cities in Texarkana will continue on Friday at 9 p.m. (EST) when the Arkansas Razorbacks meet the Texas Tigers at Razorback Stadium. More than 12,000 fans are expected for the game that’s part of the 2013 Great American Rivalry Series presented by the U.S. Army and Hibbett Sports.
The rivalry featuring schools only miles apart but separated by the Arkansas-Texas state line started in 1909 and has been played every year since with the exception of a few (1954 being the last year it wasn’t played). Texas leads the series 61-30-7, having won 13 of the last 15 meetings including last season’s 13-7 squeaker. Arkansas hasn’t come out on top since 2000. The two teams tied in 2007.
Both teams really struggled last season, as coach Barry Norton’s Tigers went 3-7 and coach Todd Ledford’s Razorbacks ended 2-9. Both teams will try to get back on the right track and open their respective seasons with a win.
Texas will be led by senior back Trey Walker and senior middle linebacker Anthony Rhone. Walker ran for 1,006 yards and seven TDs last season, while Rhone led the defense with 142 tackles.
On the other side, Arkansas will look to junior back Andrew Bishop and senior middle linebacker Kendrix McCann to run the show. Bishop had 719 yards and nine TDs last season despite missing a few games and McCann had a 124-tackle season.
