August 27, 2013Great American Rivalry Series
BLUEFIELD, WV – Another edition of the annual “Battle of the Bluefields” is upon us, as the Bluefield Beavers take on the Graham G-Men on Friday at 7:30 p.m. (EST) More than 10,000 fans are expected at 70-plus-year-old Mitchell Stadium for a game that’s part of the Great American Rivalry Series presented by the U.S. Army and Hibbett Sports. It’s the fourth straight time Bluefield and Graham have met as part of the Series.
This will be the 87th meeting between these two schools, which share the same stadium and are only three miles apart but reside in two different states. The Beavers lead the all-time series 62-22-2, having won three of four. The G-Men won last season’s meeting 23-21 after the Beavers missed a last-second field goal from the 6-yard line.
The rivalry started in 1911 and the two schools have met each year since 1928 with the exception of 1937. The winning school has been presented with the “Twin State” trophy for the last 10 years.
The Beavers, coached by Fred Simon, went 9-3 and came up three wins shy of winning their 11th state title last season. They will have a good chance to get that title this season, as they return 13 starters including four-year starter D.J. Edwards. He had 619 passing yards, 516 rushing yards and 21 TDs, and he also led the team in tackles. Junior D.J. Stewart is also back after rushing 743 yards and 11 TDs along with four returns for 200 yards and a TD.
The G-Men finished last season 7-4 and are coached by Mike Williams. Senior Colby Hill will make his first start under center, while senior Dylan Cook will come out of the backfield.
