Prior to his arrival, the Martha’s Vineyard/Nantucket rivalry had been very much one sided with Nantucket having the edge of 26 wins to only 11 for Martha’s Vineyard and the archrival Whalers. Coach Herman and his counterpart on Nantucket, Vito Cappizzo, have had storied but respectful battles on the field. Since Coach Cappizzo’s retirement, Coach Herman has had two victories over Vito’s successors in two outstanding games. It is the opinion of many people in the Martha’s Vineyard family that Coach Herman has had a big hand in what is now considered one of the best rivalries in high school football history as recognized by the iHigh and Great American Rivalry Series third year covering the game. From Nantucket High School- Dick Herman: Dick Herman came to Nantucket in 1966 from Cambridge, MA to become a Math Teacher and has never left. He was hired by long-time Nantucket Head Football Coach Vito Capizzo in 1970 to be an assistant football coach. Dick has coached in 16 Nantucket/Martha’s Vineyard games and was a key component to the early success of Nantucket Whaler Football. After his coaching career ended in 1985, he realized he wanted to stay connected with the program and turned to television and the Nantucket Booster Club. Dick has been the TV voice of Whaler football and all Nantucket sports for over 20 years. Dick has been a member of the Nantucket Booster Club for 42 years and Vice-President for the last 14 years. Both of his sons, Peter and Rick, played in the rivalry back in the 90’s. Dick is a life-long Whaler supporter and his time with Whaler Football will always be remembered.
