Dillard-22 Blanche Ely-6

November 11, 2012
Great American Rivalry Series

The 4-5 Dillard Panthers played the 5-5 Mighty Tigers of Blanche Ely in this year’s “Soul Bowl” at Lockhart Stadium.  These teams have met off and on since 1962, but the game was not coined the “Soul Bowl” until the 1983 season. Since then it has been a tight race in the series, the Tigers currently lead it 20-19-1 and have won three straight against the Panthers.

Its kickoff time here in Fort Lauderdale, Florida as two teams are ready for the annual "Soul Bowl" game- which includes taking home the "Soul Bowl" trophy and the glass bowl, as Blanche Ely walks on the field caring the trophies.  First quarter gets started with the Panthers punting the ball to the Tigers. Its Tigers ball but it is quickly fumbled back over to the Panthers.  The Tigers defense tried to hold strong and not allow the Panthers to score but the Dillard quarterback found the endzone on a 4th down. The Panthers lead 7-0. The Tigers get the ball back on a long kick return to put the offense in a good starting position.  But the Tigers lost the ball, allowing the Panthers to score yet again to put the score at 14-0 as the clock is winding down in the first half.  Just before the end of the 2nd quarter Dillard High School finds the endzone yet again with the Panthers running in the locker run for halftime with a 22-0 lead.  Halftime is over, and the Panthers are ready to finish this game off. The third quarter saw no points as the teams got ready for the 4th quarter. The Tigers came out strong scoring their first touchdown at the beginning of the 4th. They missed the extra point attempt, but it would not have mattered anyway as the Panthers hold on to win 22-6.

The Dillard Panthers not only are taking home the "Soul Bowl" football trophy and the glass bowl trophy but, they are also walking away with their 2nd Great American Rivalry Series Championship Trophy.  Dillard's very own #2 Dre'Sean Nelson was awarded the Most Valuable Player of the game with his two touchdowns of the night.
