Godby vs. Lincoln - 11/8/12 - 6:00PM (EDT)

November 8, 2012
Great American Rivalry Series

Gene Cox Stadium will be the site of Thursday night’s cross-town matchup between the Godby Cougars and the Lincoln Trojans. The Trojans defeated Godby 35-21 last season en route to their 13th straight district title. The two schools first met in 1977 with the Trojans leading the all-time series 24-12. Lincoln has won the last 5 meetings, but the Cougars are looking to rebound from last weekend’s loss to Wakulla to snap the streak.

The Lincoln Trojans have lived up to their billing as a perennial powerhouse with their perfect 8-0 record in 2012. After a disappointing early exit in the first round of the Class 7A playoffs last year, the Trojans seem poised to make a run at the state title this season. The Trojans have already clinched the District 1-7A championship to give them 14 straight district titles (2 in District 1-7A and 12 in District 3-4A). The offense has been led by senior Cameron Joseph at quarterback. He has thrown for just under 1,000 yards with 9 touchdowns on the season. The backfield will feature two seniors at running back in Ben Robinson and Cameron Lang. Lang has really come on as of late. In last weekend’s win over Forest, Lang rushed for over 120 yards and found the endzone twice in the Trojan’s 35-28 victory. Lining up outside will be Rivals.com #15 and #23 ranked wide receivers, Reggie Davis and Taj Williams. Davis has committed to play at the University of Florida, while Davis is looking at Alabama, South Carolina and South Florida. Senior Myles Gaines will also line up as receiver to give the Trojans plenty of ammunition in their passing attack. The defense is anchored by the #7 inside linebacker in the nation, James Hearns. Hearns has committed to play at the University of Florida. Joining him at linebacker are senior Carson Combs and junior Jeff Williams. The new D-line will feature juniors Josh King and Charles Wilkins. Senior Jamerson Blount will patrol the secondary at free safety. The Trojans enter Thursday night’s game as Rivals.com’s #65 team in the nation.

The Godby Cougars finished with an 8-4 record in the 2011 season that finished with a 20-14 loss to Wakulla in the regional semi-finals. The Cougars are on pace to make a deeper run in the playoffs than last year. Godby could have won the district title last weekend but came up short against Wakulla again to give the Cougars their first loss of the season. The Cougars (8-1) are led on offense by junior quarterback J.T. Bradwell. Bradwell has thrown for over 1,500 yards and 16 touchdowns, while only throwing 3 interceptions. Much of Bradwell’s success can be attributed to the plethora of talent he has surrounding him. University of Kentucky commit Khalid Thomas leads the Cougar rushing attack. Senior Tim Longmire, junior Kenny Young and sophomore Jaylin Heyward have also seen carries out of the backfield. Bradwell’s main target at receiver all year has been senior Earl Calloway. Joining Calloway outside are Longmire, Heyward and senior Wade Phillip. Seniors Clayton Simmons and Tiarik Cooper anchor the defensive line. The linebacking unit will have seniors Bud McDonald, Luke Helms and Markise McQueen as well as juniors Kris Harris and Corey Pressley. The secondary will consist of seniors Deion Singleton, Lester Thomas and Dallas Williams, along with junior De’Eric Culver. The Cougars will be in the playoffs regardless of what happens but they will look to snap their current 5-game losing streak to the Trojans this Thursday.
