An estimated 17,000 fans where in the stands to witness the Northside Eagles defeat the Warner Robins Demons 35-28 in a thrilling rivalry matchup that saw the Eagles clinch the Region 2-5A championship Friday night. The Eagles got up big early on and did not let up despite the Demons valiant effort to come back.
The scoring got started late in 1st quarter when Northside’s Charlton Lane hauled in a 19-yard touchdown catch to put the Eagles up 7-0. The Demons struggled to get much of anything going on offense. On the ensuing possession after the touchdown, they fumbled twice but managed to recover both times. The Demons were forced to punt and the Eagles capitalized. Quarterback Glenn Smith found Keshun Hill for his first touchdown of the night. After another Demon punt, Smith found Hill again, this time for a 28-yard hookup to put Northside up 21-0 going into the half.
The Demons came out determined in the 2nd half. They forced the Eagles to punt on their first possession. Warner Robins quarterback Caden Johnston capped off the ensuing drive with a long TD run to bring them within 14. The Eagles started the next possession with great field position but turned the ball back over to the Demons on an interception. DD Wright found the endzone on an 8-yard touchdown run to cut the Eagles lead to 7 with just under 6 minutes to play in the 3rd. The Eagles extended their lead on the next drive when Hill recorded his 3rd touchdown of the night on a 17-yard run to make it a 2 possession game.
The 4th quarter opened up with a great Warner Robins drive that was capped off by Wright’s 1-yard plunge into the endzone. The Demons now only trailed by 7 with 9 minutes left to play in the game. Northside could not muster up a drive to put the game out of reach and were forced to punt it back to the Demons. After a facemask penalty on the Eagles, the Demons were now threatening to tie the game. The Eagle D came up with a huge interception to stop the Demons and were now back in control of the game. Hill broke off a huge 26-yard touchdown run to give him 4 on the night and to put the game out of reach. Johnston hooked up with Deanthony Mack for a 16-yard strike but it was too little too late for the Demons. The Eagles celebrated their 35-28 victory. Keshun Hill was named the MVP for his 4 touchdown performance.
