Great American Rivalry Series

Phoebus and Hampton play another classic in a game much closer than the final score of 35-21. The rivals traded touchdowns and momentum all game until Phoebus was able to pull away late in the 4th quarter.

The game got off to an exciting start with three touchdowns in the 1st quarter. Hampton was the first to score with a 1-yard touchdown run. Phoebus responded on a catch of 31-yards by Tight End Troy Durham. Hampton would then cap off the quarter with a 50-yard touchdown run on the first play after recovering a Phoebus muffed punt.

Great American Rivalry MVP and Phoebus running back Tony Pittman proved to be the difference in the game. Pittman scored twice in the second half with both touchdowns coming in dramatic fashion. The first occurred on the first play of the 2nd half as Pittman ran the ball 65 yards to put the Phantoms up 21-14. The second came with 2:31 left in the game on a 23-yard run that proved to be the final go-ahead touchdown.

Phoebus hammered the final nail in the coffin with 39 seconds left in the game when defensive end Richie Staton batted up, caught and returned a screen pass by Hampton Deon Newsome for a touchdown.

Phoebus (10-0) and Hampton (8-2) will begin playoff play next weekend.
