October 23, 2012Great American Rivalry Series
On Friday night, Mission Viejo Diablos will host the Trabuco Hills Mustangs in a South Coast League matchup. The Diablos defeated the Mustangs last season 42-7 and have now won 4 consecutive games in the series. Mission Viejo enters the game ranked #49 nationally by Rivals.com.
The Mission Viejo Diablos are the 3-time reigning champions of the highly competitive South Coast League. The Diablos went 10-3 last season in route to the CIF Southern Section Pac-5 semifinals, where they lost 21-20 to Santa Margarita. Head Coach Bob Johnson’s team entered the 2012 season as the favorites to win the league again and so far they have lived up to the expectations. The team will be led by senior Max Redfield. Redfield, a USC commit, was elected 1st team All-County last year and is revered as one of the best all-around players in the county. He will lead the defense at free safety where he is ranked as the #3 safety in the country (Rivals.com). He will also play wide receiver. Junior Ian Feiber will be at quarterback in his first year as a starter at Mission Viejo after transferring from Orange Lutheran. Junior Alex Suchesk will lineup as running back and is having an impressive season so far. Senior Frank Schnicker and Junior Sean Modster will lineup as receivers along with Redfield. The Diablos have 5 returning starters on defense, led by Redfield. The line will be led by a trio of seniors including returning All-League players Jackson Stoddard and Garrett Marino. The Diablos are off to a perfect 8-0 start and are rising up the state rankings each week. After Santa Margarita lost their quarterback for the season, the Diablos are in the discussion to win the Pac-5 Division.
The Trabuco Hills Mustangs are looking to take the next step in the South Coast League. The Mustangs have not reached to postseason since 2009, when they were in the Southwest Division of the CIF Southern Section. Scott Orloff’s team went 6-4 in 2011 and placed 4th in the South Coast League after posting a 1-3 record in league play. The Mustangs return 11 starters in 2012, 5 of them are 3-year starters. Senior Nathan Perry will lead the Mustang offense under center. Lining up behind him in the backfield will be junior Jordan Hettinger and sophomore Chris Reck. Seniors Cole Breeland and Alex Staff are the go to receivers for Perry. Senior Zack Cody will anchor the offensive line at center. Cody is a 2-time All-South Coast League selection. Defensively, the Mustangs will start 3 seniors on the line in Spencer Herson, Mitchell Dixon and James Neese. Senior JT Land, a 3-year starter, returns at outside linebacker. Staff will lineup in the secondary with fellow senior Austin Switzer at the safety positions. The Mustangs enter Friday night’s game with a 4-4 record and are looking for a much needed win as they opened up 0-2 in league play.
