2009 Hall of Fame: Parkersburg vs. Marietta

November 24, 2009
Great American Rivalry Series

The first inductee from Parkersburg High School is Rick Phillips. Rick was an outstanding lineman at Parkersburg HS from 1981-1983 being awarded first team AAA All-State Player. In 1983, Rick received the Hunt Award given to the best lineman. After high school, he attended West Virginia University on a football scholarship and started three years there at left tackle. During his time, WVU played in three bowl games and one National Championship Game. He was a member of the 1988 WVU undefeated team that played Notre Dame in the Fiesta Bowl and was a first-team All-Conference and a First Team All-American at WVU. He graduated with a degree in education from WVU and coached at Parkersburg. As a coach, Rick has guided the Big Reds to three state championships: 1999, 2001, and 2007.

Pat MacRae was an instrumental member of the 1990 Marietta Tigers and stepped to the forefront during their rivalry game with Parkersburg. Pat was the trigger man who intercepted a pass and ran 82 yards to put Marietta ahead 6-0 during the first quarter from his outside linebacker position. The Tigers never lost the lead from that point. Pat also played quarterback that night and threw two touchdowns. He was a consummate team player and a leader on both offense and defense for his team during his career at Marietta.
