St. Augustine vs. Cathedral Catholic - 10/19/12 - 6:30 (PDT)

October 15, 2012
Great American Rivalry Series

The St. Augustine Saints will play host to the Cathedral Catholic Dons this Friday night. The matchup will be the 50th meeting between the two programs. The Dons defeated the Saints 17-3 in last year’s battle to increase their lead in the all-time series to 31-18. These two teams play in Division III in the Eastern League.

Head Coach Sean Doyle’s Cathedral Catholic football team finished the 2011 season with a 12-1 record on their way to notching their 5th straight Division III championship. Led by senior quarterback Garrett Bogart, the Dons have all the pieces in order to win their 6th straight championship in 2012. Bogart is back for his 3rd season as starting quarterback for the Dons. In 2011, he threw for over 1,800 yards and 19 touchdowns with only 4 interceptions. Senior running back Tony Johnson will be back in the backfield. Johnson suffered a serious injury in 2011 that ended his season after just 6 games. Johnson has rushed for 7 touchdowns so far this season; he recorded 3 of them in last weekend’s win over Lincoln. A trio of seniors will lead the wide receiver corps, led by newcomer Xavier Williams. Junior Kyle Davies returns on the defensive line along with sophomore Edward Purifoy Jr. Junior Xavier Ulutu will move to inside linebacker this season to join senior Toshaun Poumele. Poumele recorded 117 tackles as a junior last season. Senior Brandon Michel will have to step up at defensive back. The Dons come into Friday night’s game with a 5-2 overall record. They have started 2-0 in league play.

The St. Augustine Saints posted a 9-2 overall record in 2011, coming up just shy of the Eastern League championship. Entering his 4th year, Head Coach Richard Sanchez has squad of returning starters in his 2012 team, which should compete for the District III title. The quarterback position was up for grabs going into the beginning of the season but it looks as junior JoJo Hudson has emerged as the starter with sophomore Thomas Goodridge as the backup. The Saints suffered a big blow in the upset loss against Otay Ranch. Junior starting running back Tyler Herburger went down with a fractured right leg in the first quarter. Now the Saints will rely on freshman Elijah Preston and Francoise Sims II. Senior Patrick Dixon is the go-to wide receiver for the Saints, with fellow senior Tim Chapman and junior Ryan Harris seeing targets as well. Seniors James Filley and Ben Piorkowski will anchor the offensive and defensive lines. The Saints enter the game against Cathedral Catholic with a 6-1 record as they eye the Division III title.
