It was a stormy night in Greensboro, NC to start the 52nd meeting between the Page Pirates and the Grimsley Whirlies. The skies cleared just before kickoff as an estimated 4,000 fans looked on. Grimsley started the game off with a fumbled that was recovered by Page. Page converted the turnover into points, scoring on an 11-yard, to go up 7-0 halfway through the 1st quarter. Later in the 1st, Grimsley faced a 4th and 22 deep in Pirates territory and managed to score on a 25-yard touchdown pass to Scott Johnson. The ensuing extra point attempt was blocked, making the score 7-6 with 5:00 left in the 1st. Page’s quarterback Jordan Putnam scored on an 11-yard run to put the Pirates up 14-6 as the skies opened up at the end of the 1st quarter.
Putnam put the Pirates back in scoring position after a long 50-yard pass. Putnam later scored on a 5-yard run to extend the lead for the Pirates, 21-6. Grimsley was quick to respond, quarterback Jake Simpson connected on a 67-yard pass to set the Whirlies up at the Pirate 6-yard line. Deshawn Jones scored on a 6-yard run and the Whirlies succeeded in the 2-point conversion try. The teams headed into halftime with Page up 26-12.
The 2nd half opened up with a long Page 35-yard run by Jalen Gavin to set the Pirates up at the Grimsley 8-yard line. Grimsley’s Sadeek Watts intercepted Putnam’s pass to get the Whirlies out of the jam. The Whirlies ended up turning the ball back over on downs. Page capitalized quickly off the turnover. Putnam connected with Justin Neal on a 37-yard pass to put the Pirates up 28-12. Putnam scored again on a 3-yard run to extend the Pirates lead even further, 35-12 late in the 3rd quarter.
The Whirlies never really threatened again. A couple of late touchdowns were added by each team, but none of it mattered as the Page Pirates got the 49-25 win over the Grimsley Whirlies.
