Basic vs. Green Valley - 9/28/12 - 7:00 (PDT)

September 24, 2012
Great American Rivalry Series

The Basic Wolves will take on the Gators of Green Valley in the annual Henderson Bowl game this Friday night in Henderson, NV. Basic has played Green Valley in this game every year since its doors opened back in 1991. Green Valley won last year’s game, 36-33, to snap a 3-game losing streak in the series. The Gators lead the all-time series in wins 13-8.

After a 5-1 start to begin the 2011 season, Green Valley finished with a 4-game losing streak and a loss in the Sunset Regional quarterfinals to finish the season at .500. The 2012 Gator team will have some fresh faces at key positions. Sophomore Christian Lopez has emerged as the starting quarterback for the Gators. Lopez accounted for 5 touchdowns in Green Valley’s week 2 matchup against Del Sol. He rushed for 4 touchdowns and passed for another to help the Gators win, 59-33. His backfield will feature senior Gino Jonassanit who will be replacing last year’s starter in Aaron Love. Jonassanit rushed for more than 200 yards and 3 touchdowns against Del Sol. Junior Markus Varner and 6’5” senior Todd Adonis will lineup as wide receiver to give Lopez a solid passing attack. Junior Tyrell Crosby will anchor the offensive line as a member of the Las Vegas Sun’s preseason All-City Team. The defensive will be solid upfront with seniors Keti Salakielu and Sam McAloon returning on the line. If the Gators can mature throughout the season with their young squad, they should be poised to make it back to the playoffs.

The Basic Wolves finished with a 6-5 overall record in the 2011 season, making it to the semifinals of the Sunrise Region playoffs where they lost to Foothill. The #4 seed Wolves defeated the top seed Canyon Springs in stunning fashion, 42-21. The Wolves are looking to add to last year’s postseason success and make it to the Sunrise Region finals. They will look to do it with a new quarterback in senior Jaylen Rose. In Basic’s week 2 victory over Durango, Rose threw for 365 yards and 6 touchdowns. 4 of those touchdowns were thrown to 3-year starter Devonte Boyd, who finished with 141 yards receiving. The senior is ranked as the #7 player in Nevada according to Rivals.com and is being heavily recruited by UNLV. In 2011, Boyd hauled in 65 passes for 1,118 yards and 8 touchdowns. Juniors Antraye Johnson and Jon Scoffield will both see action as running backs. Johnson, being the athlete that he is, will also play some wide receiver and quarterback as well as acting as the team’s punter and place-kicker. The Wolves defense will be led by seniors Mike Roberts at defensive end and Anthony Owens at defensive back.
