Great American Rivalry Series

The Jesuit Marauders will play host to the Christian Brothers Falcons this Saturday in the 42nd annual “Holy Bowl”. This annual meeting between the 2 schools was first played in 1969 with Jesuit leading the all-time series 25-15-2. The Marauders won last year’s showdown 36-12. This year’s matchup has both teams entering the game undefeated.

The Jesuit Marauders began a new era to start the 2012 season. Marlon Blanton has replaced longtime Head Coach Dan Carmazzi after 31 years with the team. Blanton will try to restore the reputation of the Jesuit football program, who last won a Sac-Joaquin Section Championship in 2002. The Marauders finished last season with a 5-5 overall record, going 2-3 in the Delta River league on their way to a playoff berth before getting beat by Bethel in the opening round. The last time Jesuit had been to the playoffs was in 2007. The Marauders return 3 starters on offense and 5 on defense. The offense will be led by returning quarterback Thomas Sperbeck. Sperbeck threw for 1,311 yards and 7 touchdowns last season to go with 5 interceptions. He was also Jesuit’s second leading rusher with 585 yards and 8 touchdowns on the ground. Rafael Aguilar, Alec Garofalo and Garrett Strohmaier will all return on the offensive line to help run the newly installed veer offense. Lining up in the backfield will be James Avila-Ellington at running back. Avila-Ellington played much of last year on defense where he recorded 25 tackles and 4 sacks. Sperbeck will also lead the defense that features cornerbacks Steve Heath, Kristan Williams and Devin Kelly. Sperbeck will play free safety for the Marauders.

The Christian Brothers Falcons are looking to rebound after last year’s disappointing 1-9 season and look to already be doing so. The Falcons are currently 3-0 on the season heading into the matchup with Jesuit. They are led on offense by senior Caden Noon at quarterback. Noon passed for 204 yards and 2 touchdowns in last week’s win over McClatchy. He also added 77 yards and 2 touchdowns on 13 carries on the ground. Zach Brooks and Hayden Jones round out a talented receiving core who Noon took advantage of in last week’s game. Brooks and Jones each caught a touchdown pass in the game. Erik Bloomquist and Evan Cook lead a stellar defense that held McClatchy to just 70 yardsrushing and 80 yards passing.
