Alcoa vs. Maryville, (TN)
In week one of the 2009 Great American Rivalry Series, Alcoa vs. Maryville will be featured as one of the premier football rivalries in America. Touted as the biggest rivalry in the state of Tennessee, this game often draws crowds in excess of 10,000 fans. The 2A Alcoa Tornadoes are the first Tennessee high school football team to win five consecutive state titles and appear to be off to another good start this season with a 42-14 victory over Bell County (KY) last Friday night. The 4A Maryville Rebels have had one of the best winning streaks in high school history, winning 74 consecutive games before losing what would have been their fifth straight state championship last fall. In the past eight meetings between these rivals, Maryville has come out on top, and they are the only team other than Fulton High that has beaten Alcoa since 2004. This year, Maryville enters the season with 11 state championships, the most in Tennessee history, while Alcoa trails close behind with 10. This year's battle will be a must-see game for football fans across the state and nation. This rivalry dates back to 1927 and has been filled with decades of excitement. There is no doubt that this year will deliver more of the same.
The game will be on Friday, August 28, at 7:30.
