Red Devils Survive
February 28, 2009 By Denis Vass of Graham High School
Tonight's game was a game of vivid contrast. In the opening half, the Red Devils through down the gauntlet and held visiting Eastern Guilford to 5 first half baskets and 13 total points while putting on an offensive clinic to lead 29-13 after 2 peripds of play. The Wildcats could only manage to shoot a dismal 14% the first half (5 of 37) but the had chance after chance after chance to cut into Graham's lead. The Red Devils defense turned it up top-notch the first half.
Until the second half. What appeared to be another Graham blowout turned into anything but. The Wildcats roared back, led by Miranda Jenkins and Capricia Smalls. After holding Smalls to zero 1st half points and Jenkins to 8, they erupted for 29 the Wildcats 43 second half points. Graham, who had the hot hand the first half, came out ice cold. What was once a comfortable 21 point lead shrunk to a precarious 5 point lead late in the fourth quarter.
The Red Devils, who have been in these games the past three years, did exactly what they needed to do to hold off the Wildcat charge. Beth Miller, Kiki Allen, and Coudeney Miles, playing in their final game of their high school career on their home court, combined to hit 14 of 18 free throws down the stretch to win by a 61-56 score.
Graham (27-3) advances to the Eastern North Carolina Regional tournament for the third straight season. They will play Wednesdy March 4th at Greenville Rose High School against Jacksonville Northside (25-3) at 7:00 p.m. The Red Devils were led once again by their Senior trio. Beth Miller scored 12, had 12 assists, and 5 rebounds, while her dribbling took precious seconds off the clock to preserve the victory. Caroline Enoch contributed 6 points and 11 rebounds, while Logan Apple scored 7.
Eastern Guilford finished 17-11, and was led by Miranda Jenkins, who scored 23 points. Capricia Smalls was the only other Wildcat to hit double figures, as she scored 14. Tonight's game was the final game in the 2-A ranks for Eastern Guilford, who will move up to the 3-A next season. |
