Lady Devils Advance!
March 4, 2011By Denis Vass of Graham High School
Down 5 points with about 2 minutes to go, the Lady Devils (23-6) went on an improbable 10-0 run to capture the win.
After Caroline Enoch scored a basket with 3:34 remaining that gave the Lady Devils a 48-47 lead, Kinston (24-5), which was riding 17-game winning streak, didn't falter. A basket inside by Tisha Dixon put the Vikings back in front. A steal and a layup by Brittany Drumgoole pushed the lead out to 51-48.
After a Graham turnover with two minutes left, the Vikings beat the Red Devils' press and got a Caroline Debruhl layup to go up by five.
"When we got down by five, I was like, 'It's Over,' " Graham coach Kyle Ward said.
That's when the Red Devils began their whirlwind comeback. Remember the three words: Grit, Poise, Determination.
Kaila Lea knocked in a pair of free throws. After the Vikings misfired on an inexplicably rushed possession, Graham's Kay Kay Wilson, playing in her first game in nearly three weeks due to an ankle injury suffered late in the season, found herself with an open look from 3-point range. After a momentarly hesitation the sophomore point guard banged home a huge basket, tying the game with 1:02 left.
"I thought about it, but its all for the team, you've got to take chances," Wilson said. "I had to strike while the iron's hot and let it go."
That seemed to fluster the Vikinigs. On Kinston's next possession, Drumgoole, a freshman, drove on the right wing, but lost the ball out of bounds. She then slammed the ball in front of an official, drawing a technical foul with 51 seconds left.
BrieAna Snipes calmly swished both free throws to give the Lady Devils a 55-53 lead. Graham made sure the Vikings came up empty on their next three possessions while hitting three out of their final six free throws to steal the victrory.
Kaila Lea finished with 24 points. She was aided by 13 points from Caroline Enoch and 11 from Kay Kay Wilson.
Tisha Dixon led the Vikings with 32 points.
