Red Devils Swash Buccaneers
January 23, 2010By Denis Vass of Graham High School
For the second time this season, Graham swept the Buccaneers from Bartlette Yancey. All three games were by double-digit margins, with the girl's win the most lopsided game of the year for them.
The JV boys got things started with a 77-64 victory. The JV's sported a 14 point half time lead. The Buccaneers came back in the 3rd quarter and cut Graham's lead to 4. Then the Red Devils turned the tables and ran past the Buccaneers. The final tally was 77-64. The win pushes their record to 13-4 and improved their conference mark to 4-2.
Apple pie. Apple crisp. Apple cobbler. Apple fritters. Apple cake. All mouth-watering images of sweetness. Graham pulled out their version of Apple sweetness last night in the play of Junior guard Logan Apple. For the 2nd straight game, Logan was on fire. Two nights prior, Logan scored a career high 21 points against Northwood. Last night, she bested her career high with 23 points. Apple came out on the court red-hot, canning five 1st period 3-point baskets, and 17 total in the 1st period. She hit her next two 3-point baskets, one each in the 2nd and 3rd quarter before taking a much deserved rest the 4th quarter. Apple also contributed 5 steals for the game.
With Graham (9-8, 4-2) ahead 16-7 in the 1st after the Buccaneers' (1-15, 0-7) Bria Wilson hit a jump shot with 2:10 remaining, the Red Devils went on a 20-0 tear that lasted until the 3:53 mark of the 2nd quarter when Wilson scored the only 5 points for Bartlette Yancey the 2nd quarter. Graham led 23-7 after one period and 40-12 at the half.
Laurin Collie scored a basket for Bartletty Yancey to open the 4th quarter, and that was all the scoring the Bucs could muster. They missed all 8 of their free throws, and were outscored 33-4 the second half.
The final score was 73-16.
The Red Devils shot a scorching 62.5% from beyond the 3-point arch, hitting 10 of 16 attempts, while shooting 49% overall for the game (26 of 58). Bartlette Yancey was stone-cold, shooting 19% for the game (7 of 37). They could only muster 12% the 2nd half, 2 of 17.
About the only thing the Red Devils had trouble with was their free throw shooting. They only connected on 10 of 28 attempts.
The Boy's game started similar to the girls, with Graham bolting to an early 9-0 lead before The Buccaneers Anthony Bigelow's basket with 2:30 remaining put them on the board. He connected on the Bucs 14th shot from the floor.
Justin Cousin's 3-point basket at the 6:20 mark of the 2nd quarter ignited Graham to a 14-0 run before Ceron Crawley's 3 point basket halted the Red Devil's. The run expanded into a 21-7 burst that led to a 34-14 halftime lead.
Graham won easily, 71-50 to improve to 11-5, and 4-2 in the skin-tight Mid-State 2-A Conference. Bartlett Yancey evened their record at 7-7, and fell to 2-5 in the conference.
Justin Cousin led all scorers with 22 points. He added 3 assists and 3 rebounds. Marquise Richmond added 13 points and 4 rebounds. He also had 2 blocks. Ryan Henderson scored 10 points while grabbing 8 rebounds. He misfired on 2 dunks before getting it right on his last basket. Dominique Pass dished out 11 assists. Quan Harris scored 8 points in relief.
The Buccaneers got 20 points from Anthony Bigelow and 11 from Cedrick Randolph.
All of Graham's remaining games are with Mid-State 2-A Conference foes. Next week the Red Devils travel to Reidsville on Tuesday and then across the railroad tracks to Cummings on Friday.
