Graham Boys Repeat

Friday night’s Mid-State 2-A Conference tournament championship was another microcosm of the season for the Graham boys’ basketball team, according to point guard Don Evans.
It wasn’t pretty and lacked rhythm at times, with some spurts of dominance for the Red Devils.
And, as has been the case for Graham more often than not this season, the result was a victory.
Graham staved off a Jordan-Matthews team that wouldn’t go away for a 66-62 victory in the tournament final, winning the tournament for the second year in a row.
“Our games go like our season has been going,” Evans said. “We peak in a game, it’s like a roller-coaster. You peak and then you have a bad spurt.”
With the Red Devils (16-7) bound for the state playoffs starting Monday on a six-game winning streak, Friday night’s game represented another chance for Graham to click into top gear.
Evans said Graham missed its mark, and now there isn’t any more room for error.
“This is it. We have to make that final push. And the crazy thing about our season is that we haven’t peaked,” Evans said. “We’ve had stretches of two or three good games and then we’ve played bad, but we still get a win. But we haven’t peaked and continued to play great ball.”
The peaks and valleys of the roller-coaster that was Friday night’s game were obvious, with Graham trailing 13-7 after the first quarter, then scoring 27 points in the second quarter to take a 34-27 lead into halftime.
Jontae Sellars provided a burst off the bench in that second quarter when he drained three of his four 3-pointers — which accounted for all 12 of his points
