February 25, 2013By Denis Vass of Graham High School
Graham boys hosted East Bladen tonight in the Devils' Den, and routed the Eagles by a 89-70 score.
The Eagles came out flying, grabbing a 8-3 and 11-6 lead, before the Red Devils (23-5) tied the game up 11-11 with slightly over 5 1/2 minutes left in the opening stanza.
Graham then ramped up the defense and offense, went on a 24-0 run that spanned the rest of the period and into the 2nd, to bust open the game at 35-11. Jaquan Jones made a pair of free throws to stop the flood at the 6:52 mark of the second period.
Although the Eagles and Red Devils basically played even basketball the rest of the game (Graham, 57 points, to East Bladen's 59), the damage from Graham's shock and awe first period offensive explosion (8 threes) was too much for East Bladen (15-11) to overcome. The Red Devils also had more bodies to throw at the Eagles that eventually wore them down.
Troy Bowden led the Red Devils with 23 points. Bowden connected on 4 of Graham's 13 three-point baskets. Kendall Patterson scored 21 points, hitting three 3's. Trent Torain also nailed three 3's and ended with 12 points. Graham hit 22 of their 29 free thows.
The Eagles were led by Jaquan Jones, who singlehandedly kept East Bladen from being slaughtered. Jones shake-and-baked his way to 28 of East Bladen's 70 points. Devonte Berry added 10 points for the Eagles, who dropped their fourth consecutve game.
Graham now hosts Clinton, the #7 seed from the East Central Conference, standing at 20-7, who won tonight over South Columbus 77-65 on Wednesday night.
The Lady Devils traveled to Bealuaville tonight to take on East Duplin, and came home with an impressive 56-30 win over the #6 seed. They will take to the road again on Wednesday, this time traveling to Whiteville, who beat Croatan tonight 45-27. The Pam Pack is the #3 seed out of the Waccamaw Conference, sporting a 20-6 record.
