Jets Shot Down

Graham's JV boys started things off tonight, but 2013 has not been kind to Coach Kyle Ward's Junior Devils. They dropped their third game o the season, losing 47-45 to fall to 10-3, 1-2. Graham was led by Khalil Cole's 14 points. This was the scond time in a week the JV's sufferd scoring woes.
For the Varsity Girls, the Lady Jets came in undefeated at 14-0 , winners of 45 straight games, and ranked #1 in the state in the 2A Division. The Lady Jets had all their engines fall off, the fuel run out, crashed and burned and suffered their first loss as the Lady Devils upset them 53-43.
Graham led 13-10 after one period of play, and turned up the heat in the second period, running the Lady Jets ragged as they outscored them 13-2 to run into the locker room with a 26-12 lead. Kay Kay Wilson had 7 points, Bri Snipes 6, and Deja Cousin 5 the first half, while holding Myla Garner, the All-Everything center of the Jets to 0 first half points.
The Lady Jets were able to seize some momentum in the third quarter, outscoring Gaham 17-9 as Graham held to a 35-29 lead after three periods of play.
The Lady Devils maintained their intensity they showed the first half, playing aggressing and smart basketball as they held on for the 53-43 win.
Kay Kay Wilson led Graham with 17 points, while Deja Cousin added 13, banging home 3 three point baskets, two in the pivotal final quarter. Bri Snipes also added 13 for Graham.
Myla Garner finished with 15 points, all in the second half. Taylor Paige added 13 for the Lady Jets. Garner tried to single-handedly lead the Lady Jets with a comeback, but lack of a support cast led to their eventual downfall.
The Lady Devils have now won 8 of their last 9 games to improve to 9-7, while holding onto first place in the confernce at 4-0. The Jets fell to 14-1 3-1.
In the Varsity Boys game, the Jets came in with an impressive 13-1 record, suffering their first loss earlier in the week to conference foe Eastern Randolph.
Graham's defensive pressure thoroughly befuddeled the Jets, and Graham took full advantage, jumping out to a 23-10 first period lead and a 38-20 half time lead. Graham led 53-38 heading into the final period.
The Jets went on a 17-5 run the first six minutes to pull within 3 points at 58-55 when Derek Hamilton powered in for a basket, was fouled, and hit a free throw. There was 2:10 left in the game at that point. The Jets thought they had seized momentum. The Red Devils then tightened the screws on defense, stripping the ball several times and pulling down defensive rebounds, and slammed the door shut as they outscored the Jets 11-2 the final 2 minutes to pull out the win.
Troy Bowden had the hot hand the final period, hitting a pair of long range bombs and 4 free throws that gave Graham breathing room. Bowden scored 12 of his 22 points the final period to lead all scorers. Kendall Patterson added 14 points, while Antonio Turner scored 10 for the Red Devils.
Graham banged home 10 three point buckets, to the Jets none.
Derek Hamilton led the Jets witrh 18 points, while Antione Williams added 14.
Graham improves to 12-4, 3-1 in Mid-State 2A play, while the Jets fell to 13-2, 2-2.
Graham will host the Wildcats of Eastern Randolph next Friday evening in the Devil's Den.
