Graham Boys Win, Girls Tumble
December 7, 2012By Denis Vass of Graham High School
The Southern Alamance varsity boys team came out of the locker room tonight, purring like a fine-tuned Ferrari. They out hustled, out shot, and basically outplayed the Graham boys the first period. The Patriots jumped out to an early lead, then grabbed a 23-20 lead after the initial 8 minutes of play.
The illusion was fleeting. The Ferrari morphed into a jalopy in the blink of an eye. The Red Devils never flinched when the Patriots ran on high-octane. Suddenly, in the second period, the tires began to go flat. The high-octane was being replaced with watered-down regular gas. The Red Devils began dropping bombs, and the Patriots were too shell shocked to respond.
The Red Devils blasted the Patriots 31-15 the second period to trot into the locker room with a 51-38 lead. The bombs fell from all sides of the court, as Graham dropped in 7 from behind the arc. Troy Bowden led the onslaught with 3 three's. In the first half, Michael Ratliff dropped in 17 points, while Trent Torain added 13.
So devastating was the second period onslaught that the wheels finally fell off the wagon, as Graham outscoring the Patriots 37-19 the second half enroute to a 88-57 blasting.
After a 6-three point basket night against Eastern Alamance Tuesday night, the Red Devils returned to form, dropping in 13 tonight.
Kendall Patterson led all scorers with 21, while Michael Ratliff and Trent Torain added 18 apiece. Jalen Burnett led Southern with 16, while Johnathan Lloys, who fouleout early in the 4th quarter, added 12.
Graham moves to 4-1, while Southern Alamance falls to 2-3.
The JV boys remained undefeated with a 76-55 smashing of Southern's Junior Pats. Brent Baldwin led the Red Devils with 19, while Khalil Cole tossed in 16 and Jama Summers 10.
The Varsity Girls were no match for Southern's powerhouse team, falling 49-36. Kay Kay Wilson led Graham with 13, while Jasmine Atkins added 8. The giels fell to 1-3
Graham will travel to Church Street Tuesday to take on the Bulldogs of Williams next Tuesday.
