Phoenix Scrape By Red Devils
May 22, 2009 By Denis Vass of Graham High School
McMichael (22-5) scratched out a 6-3 win tonight at Zachary field, knocking Graham out of the playoffs for the second consecutive year.
McMichael was very shaky in the field, committing 5 errors and leaving 9 men stranded. They made the most of Graham's relief pitcher Ty Osborne's vacillating 7th inning to advance to the Sectionals next week.
Osborne came in with the game knotted 3-all in the top of the sixth inning with the bases loaded and pitched out of the jam he inherited by Graham's starting pitcher Cody Dix.
McMichael started off the top of the 7th inning with a double by shortstop Craig Erksine. Osborne then walked the next two Phoenix batters, catcher Corey Shelton and pitcher Joseph Hughes. With the bases loaded, Osborne uncorked two consecutive wild pitches, allowing Erksine and Shelton to score. DH Thomas Hall singled in Trevor Chaney, pinch running for Hughes.
The Red Devils attempted to mount a last-ditch bottom-of-the-seventh-inning rally, as they loaded the bases with one out. Hughes came up huge, striking out second baseman Rigeberto Mendoza and getting third baseman Tyler Wiles to fly out to center.
Only two of the Phoenix runs were earned.
Hughes pitched a complete game, striking out 10 Red Devils. He walked 2 and hit three batters. He held Graham's red-hot hitters to 4 hits. Once again, the Red Devils could not get away from the single, and could not get a timely hit when it mattered the most. Graham left the bases loaded in the sixth and seventh inning and stranded 9 runners for the game.
Graham also hurt their chances on the basepath, as they had two consecutive runners, Geronki Coble and Blake Throneburg, picked off first base in rundowns induced by pitcher Joesph Hughes in the 3rd inning. The Red Devils also had a runner caught stealing second, as Seth Caison was gunned down by the Phoenix's catcher Corey Shelton in the sixth inning.
Graham ends the sesaon with a stellar 22-2 record. |
