Kendall Patterson's Overtime Heorics Propel Devils
January 31, 2012
By Denis Vass of Graham High SchoolAfter struggling through four periods and only scoring 6 ponts, Kendall Patterson caught fire and scored 8 of Graham's 12 overtime points to lead the Red Devils to a 66-61 hard-fought win over Jordan Matthews tonight in the Devil's Den.
The Jordan Matthews throng of fans, players, and coaches went absolutely hog wild at the end of regulation on what at first appeared to be a foul called against Graham with no time left on the clock. A jump ball was calld with 1.0 seconds remaing, and after a Jets time out, the ball was inbounded. As soon as the player touched it, he put the ball on the floor, the horn sounded and the red light on the backboard lit up at the same time as a whistle was blown by one of the referees signifying a foul on one of the Graham players.
The Jets faithful leaped for joy- a free throw would win the game. After a lengthly discussion, one referee declared the game was over, overtime was to be played, then all hell broke loose on the Jets sideline. Graham police was called in to quiet down the fans and get the overtime started.
Patterson stepped up and hit a pair of free throws, a three point bucket, and three of four more free throws to secure the Red Devil's 16th win overall and 8th in the conference. Graham stands at 16-7, and 8-3 in the Mid State 2A Conference with one game remaining next week against Eastern Randolph.
