January 27, 2012
By Denis Vass of Graham High SchoolGraham's Varsity Boys put together a complete 32-minute game tonight, staring down a come-from-behind-run-out-of-gas run by Cummings to push past the Cavaliers by a 75-67 score tonight at Cummings.
The Red Devils (15-7, 7-3) came out smoking, canning 5 first period three-point baskets, jumping out to a 30-17 lead. Graham was able to withstand a furious second half rally by the Cavaliers (11-5, 6-3), winning the game late by taking advantage of foul trouble by the Cavaliers.
A basket by Chris Woods put Cummings ahead 65-64 with 3:14 remaining. Justin Cousin put Graham back on top with a basket, then Kendall Patterson's two free throws put Graham ahead by 3 at 68-65. Another Woods basket pulled the Cavaliers to within one at the 59.2 mark, at 68-67.
The Red Devils then shut the door, not allowing Cummings to swish the twine any more the rest of the game. Michael Ratliff hit a free throw, Kendall Patterson hit four, then stole the ball on an inbound pass with 5 seconds left, banking in his last basket to end the game with 27 points to lead all scorers.
Justin Cousin nearly matched Patterson point-for-point. Cousin finished with 25 points, connecting on 3 three-point baskets. Patterson canned 4 three-pointers. The Red Devils as a team connected on nine three-point baskets.
