Lady Devils Upset
January 25, 2012
By Denis Vass of Graham High School Both boys teams sprinted past the Patriots of Providence Grove tonight, while the Lady Devils strubled to a 55-44 loss.
In JV action, Tyrick Gattis canned 21 points and Tim Clay supplied 16 as the Baby Devils sprinted away from a close game late in the fourth quarter to claim a 67-58 win. Khalil Cole and Cody Coleman added 8 points each.
The Varsity boys, led by Kendall Patterson and Justin Cousin, smashed Providence Grove 82-60. Patterson canned three three-point baskets the first quarter, scoring 11 of his 21 points, while Cousin also scored 21 to lead Graham (14-7. 6-3). Cousin canned four three-point buckets. Only 2 Red Devils failed to score.
Stuart Matthews led the Patriots (1-17, 0-7) with 14 points, while Mark Williamson added 12.
In the girls game, the Lady Devils came out flat, falling behind 15-6 after one quarter of play and was never able to get over the hump, as they fell 55-44. Every time the Lady Devils (11-10, 6-3) pulled within 4 or 5 points, the Lady Patriots (7-11, 2-5) put together a nice rally to pull away. The Lady Patriots were hungrier to win the game than Graham was.
Caroline Enoch led all scorers with 18 points. She also pulled down 6 rebounds and had 3 blocked shots. She was the lone Red Devil in double figures in scoring. Kay Kay Wilson and BrieAna Snipes supplied 7 points each.
The Lady Patriots, however, played as a team, with every player making it into the scoring column, led by Hope Foxx and Anna Langley, who each scored 11 points. Charity Foxx added 9, while Nadia Routh scored 8. It was obvious who wanted to win this game more, based on the hustle and determination of the Lady Patriots.
Graham will make the cross-the-railroad tracks trip Friday night to face Cummings.
