GPA Scouting Sports News
Coach Grady Johnson did another great job at hosting an event and this one was called the Dominguez Winter Showcase and it proved to be a great day of high school hoops. The field of teams were as followed: In the 4:40pm game you had Taft vs. La Verne Lutheran, 6:15pm game you had Palisades vs. Price and the finale at 8:00pm was Dominguez vs. Cathedral.
Taft recently coached by Jason Hart (Pepperdine Assistant) has a new coach in his first year with the name of CJ Williams and he is prepared to lead the Toreadors to a City League Title. The team was anchored by 2013, SG, 6'4, Kris Yanku (NAU signee) averaging 27ppg and 10rpg as well as 2015, PG, 6'1, Darius Henderson. The Toreadors faced off against the La Verne Lutheran coached by Brandon Lee also in his first year as a head coach.
La Verne Lutheran jumped out to a 19-16 lead on Taft behind the play of junior Joseph Rushing who had solid board skills was somewhat of a high flyer and strong finisher at the rim. Did we mention he is a total lefty on the court so you know his jumper was smooth. senior Kris Yanku was no slouch either, he sliced and diced and got to the rim on many occasions and he also showed his feathery jumper to boot. LVL senior Skylar Williams knocked down some threes from deep as well as senior Jay Miller. Halftime score was Taft 33, LVL 27. Taft got some production from sophomore Darius Henderson at the point guard spot with some great setups for his team and a few jumpers from the wing. The third quarter would end with a score of Taft 41, LVL 38. Final score of this game would be 67-56, LVL over Taft.
Leading scorers from teams:
LVL Leading scorers: Jay Miller with 20pts and Joe Rushing with 19pts
Taft Leading scorers: Kris Yanku with 18pts, Usama Zaid with 16pts and Darius Henderson with 15pts.
Palisades 63, Price 60
2013, SG, 6'4, Price HS, Chance Murray (ASU signee) scored from the outside, inside and above the rim. This kid is real smooth in everything he does, works hard and his scholarship is well deserved in my book. Was a physical beast to opposing guards on the floor. Finished with 13 points in the game
2014, PG, 6'2, Price HS, Chris Martin ran his team with efficiency and confidence, he is a smooth operater as well, he rarely turned over the ball in this game. His shot has improved and he is very strong to the basket and a quicks attacking guard. Offers will come in soon for this kid, he plays with mega confidence. Finished with 12 points in the game
2013, SF, 6'5, Palisades HS, Ammar Rehman is a solid fundamentally sound wing guard that can put the ball on the floor and attack the rim or pull up for a jumpshot. His game was impressive in all aspects on the floor. Finished with 18 points in this game.
Cathedral 61, Dominguez 52
2013, PG, 5'11, Cathedral HS, Josh Brown (UTEP signee) was a good as they come, a firecracker on the court and as smooth a point guard as any I have seen this year. He was able to get to the rim at will and finish thru contact as well as showed off a nice midrange jumper off the dribble pullup. I see why he signed with UTEP, they get a great one here in this kid.
2013, PG, 6'0, Dominguez HS, EJ Johnson played well in the game but struggled at the beginning, he worked it out and started to show his feathery jumper in the lane and his patented floater in traffic. He was strong to the basket and finished thru contact and also showed a range from behind the arc. His defensive skills were great as well, with several picks from behind while guarding Josh Brown on the floor.
2013, SG, 5'10, Dominguez HS, Henry Dodson showed he has a nice midrange shot from the freethrow line off the pullup. He hit three of those and also hit a long range three pointer to boot in this game. Defensively, Henry is probably the best on the Dominguez squad, he is always given the job of guarding the best player on the opposing team. This kid is a sleeper, he is real good.
2014, SF, 6'7, Cathedral HS, Jerome Bryant is a high flyer on floor, genuine shot blocker and key hustle player on the floor, Kurt Rambis type. He had a couple of real nice athletic follow up dunks in traffic, he really threw it down real hard as well. He has the body and size needed to be an elite prospect, he will need to polish up his post game presence and then this kid is solid. Definite D1 guy in my book.
2015, C, 6'9, Cathedral HS, Jean-Christophe Bores is a definite prospect, he was the biggest and most physical person on the floor. He used his jump hook and face up game to keep the defense on their toes. He was a rebounding machine and blocked and bothered shots in the lane. He had very soft hands and was a quick leaper, very solid fundamentally on the floor.
