GPA Scout Report of Torrey Pines Holiday Classic:
We spent four days down in San Diego watching games in two different gyms which were Torrey Pines and the National Division and La Jolla Country Day and the American Division.
I will highlight most of the athletes that I observed and I believe to be prospects for college coaches to take a closer look at. I saw a great deal of athletes on this trip and it was a great one to take some time to visit down in San Diego. We want to first thank Kelly Peters for allowing us to cover the event for the whole four days.
With that being said, here we go with the prospects that impressed us at the event.....
Evan Fitzner
2014, 6'9, Junior, SF
Francis Parker, San Diego, CA
Evan is a multi-dimensional player that is equipped with all of the tools needed to be a great D1 player in the near future. He is most effective on the perimeter shooting the ball, but showed he could face up around the basket and make plays. Will project to be a good matchup problem four, because he can stretch the defense with his shooting ability. Needs to improve on his strength and ballhandling and then this kid is a nightmare matchup.
Andrew Cross
2016, 6'0, Freshman, PG
Francis Parker, San Diego, CA
Andrew is a true point guard for his team, he sets up the offense with confidence and also runs the pick and roll well with teammates Evan Fitzner and Dane Norman. He has a decent shot from the outside but preferred to get to the basket. He was a decent defender, did a great job against Devin Watson (Army-Navy). Cross will be a definite D1 guy, but what level remains to be seen because he is so young, we will monitor his progress over the next few years.
Mike Nwabuzor
2014, 6'0, Junior, PG
Mayfair, Lakewood, CA
Mike is a shooting guard in a point guards body, he is real athletic and can get to the basket at will off the dribble. He has a decent shot out to the three point line and he is efficient at running his coaches offense. His defensive skills are the real asset, this kid is a stopper, he has the capability of guarding the best guard on the other team. Mike is a D2 guy that will be a great addition for any program out there waiting for a point guard that can also score the ball when needed, will keep monitoring this kid for the next year, his stock will go up after this season of club, I am willing to guarantee that.
Justin Simon
2015, 6'4, Sophomore, SG
Roosevelt, Corona, CA
Justin is a shooting guard that has really become an athletic nightmare for the school that is his opponent. His shot has improved and his ball handling skills are getting better each and every time I see him play. He can play above the rim and is capable of taking over a game if he chooses. Justin is a D1 guy and will continue to get better in the next few years. we will definitely be watching Justin and his progress thru his commitment as a junior or senior.
Zavier Harris
2015, 6'7, Sophomore, C
Temecula Valley, Temecula, CA
Zavier is a raw talent, but a definete prospect to boot, he is an ample rebounder and loves to block shots when opponents attack the rim. His post game is still developing, but this kid is an athletic athlete. He could finish under the rim, pass out of the double-team to open shooters and set screens for his teammates. Expect this kid to get better over the next few years playing with this team. He is a D1 player and will get better thru training and experience on the floor.
Brandon Rosser
2013, 6'8, Senior, C
Temecula Valley, Temecula, CA
Brandon is an athletic center who can create many matchup problems, because he can put the ball on the floor and attack the defense. I witness him, swing thru on a defender attack baseline and dunk it with two hands, HARD!! This kid is explosive and showed us some skills from the outside, hitting the fifteen foot shot with some consistency. His defense is adequate and he was a team leader, I believe this kid to be a D1 athlete and I was told he has offers on the table from (Cal State Northridge and Northern Arizona). From his performance this weekend, Brandon may receive some much higher offers from some other waiting schools.
Devin Watson
2014, 6'0, Junior, PG
Army/Navy Academy, Carlsbad, CA
Devin is a well-known guard in the city of San Diego, he had quite a year as a freshman at his school being one of the leading scorers in the county. He runs his team with efficiency, runs the pick and roll well and commands respect out on the floor. He is quick and savvy with the basketball and can elude his defenders with the dribble. His shot is good from midrange and as well as the three point line, bottom line, he is a scorer. Devin is a D1 point guard and what level will reveal itself in the near future as his game continues to grow.
Cameron Walker
2015, 6'6, Sophomore, SF
Righetti, Santa Maria, CA
Cameron is a D1 prospect right off the back, he posesses the body, the height, the skill set and many other attributes to his game. He can shoot the ball, attack off the dribble, finish above the rim and is an athletic player. He uses his savvy skill to make plays, but one thing he will have to work on is his strength and finishing thru contact on drives to the basket. Otherwise, he is a coaches dream ready to packaged. He screams high major, but only time will tell us where he will end up, we will be monitoring his progress.
EJ Johnson
2013, 6'0, Senior, PG
Dominguez, Compton, CA
EJ is a true point guard in his own right, he commands respect on the floor and is a born leader out there. He is quick with the ball and his handle is quite good, he shoots the ball well and is great at the midrange shot. I am not sure if EJ has any offers yet, but after this tournament, schools will begin to show some more interest in him. He will make some coach a great floor leader on the floor. We will monitor his progress throughout this year.
Henry Dodson
2013, 5'10, Senior, SG
Dominguez, Compton, CA
Henry surprised me this past weekend, I had seen him play in the Oceanview TOC and he was impressive then, but now I could see that Henry is a good player and he needs to get a little more attention from programs. His midrange game is good, his handle is adequate and he can defend the 1-3 positions. He was always given the opponents best player to defend and did a good job.
Kalin Peters
2014, 6'3, Junior, SF
Dominguez, Compton, CA
Kalin is a bouncy athletic player that plays with a lot of confidence in his game at both ends of the floor. He is a lefty so his shot is silky smooth and he is well capable of playing above the rim on any ocassion. He c.an defend and is wired to be a pure scorer on the floor. We will monitor his progress throughout this year.
Jase Harrison
2013, 6'4, Senior, SG
Paraclete, Lancaster, CA
Jase is a true competitor on the floor that we witnessed this past weekend, he was a true leader as well as a slasher. He shot the ball with great accuracy, got to the rim at will and used the dribble to elude defender. He was a adequate defender and he played the screens well whether he showed on screens or went under. We will monitor Jases progress as well this season.
Devin Wright
2013, 5'10, Senior, SG
Thunderbird, Phoenix, AZ
This kid had some game, he was a tenacious defender and used all of his skills to put together a great game. He shot the ball well from all three levels and also had a nice handle to boot. He was able to get to the basket off the dribble and was good at the drive and kick game. He will gain some attention from some programs after this weekend, will monitor his progress.
Dillon Reise
2014, 6'6, Junior, SG
Ocean view, Huntington Beach, CA
Dillon is an athletic left handed shooting guard on the rise, he is a long bodied defender and scorer. He uses his length to shoot three pointer in your face or utilizes the floater in the lane to finish you off. He can pass the ball fairly well and is an underrated scorer. He can put numbers up at will and also defend smaller quicker guards with much success. Dillon is a D1 guy, but we will have to monitor his progress to determine what level he will end up. He is now starting to attract attention from some schools.
Kendall Small
2015, 6'0, Sophomore, PG/SG
Ocean view, Huntington Beach, CA
Kendall is an athletic, physical point guard that is capable of scoring a great deal of points in a hurry when needed. He is a natural born leader on the floor with great vision and skill. His handle is superior, his shot is decent and his ability to finish above the rim is surprising for a guard of his size. I witnessed him throw down two monster dunks in the Charlie Wilkins tournament last week. This kid put up 29, 20, 21 & 23 in this tournament this weekend, that is major in my book. Arizona, Cal, Washington, U of Portland, Santa Clara, San Diego State, Oregon State, Colorado State and USC were in to watch him this past weekend.
Jalen Jenkins
2015, 6'4, Sophomore, SF
Mesa, Mesa, AZ
Jalen is a physical specimen of an athlete with great athletic skills posessed by a left handed player. He is said to be the best 2015 prospect in Arizona and I could see why when he played this weekend. He was a physical defender, he use his athletic skills to get to the rim or to throw down a dunk in transition. He slashed to the rim with vengeance and kept defenders at bay. He is D1 kid, but what level is what needs to be determined. We will monitor his progress.
