Home » Girls' Tennis NewsGrimsley Wins the State Championship!November 5, 2011 By Karyn Collie of Grimsley Senior High SchoolThe Grimsley Women's Tennis team played a stellar match today against reigning two-time state champions, Raleigh Broughton. In a match that lasted over four hours, the Whirlies took the women's tennis state title for the first time since 1970. After singles, we were ahead 4-2, and entered into doubles knowing that we had to win one doubles match to take the title. As our girls battled it out on their courts, it became clear that the two teams were very evenly matched, as Broughton took the first two doubles matches, tying the score 4-4. The final doubles match came down to our reigning state doubles champions, Clare Cox and Roxanne Henshall, who stayed strong to win 10-8. It has been a huge year for the Lady Whirlies and we are proud to say that we are officially #1! Way to go, Whirlies! SINGLES: Clare Cox d. Katie Kane 7-5, 6-0 Majdou Lavoie d.
