The Pekin panthers came into the Stockport gym and handed the Warriors their first loss of the season in their home opener by a score of 18-13. The panthers jumped out to an early lead scoring 8 unanswered points in the first half and taking a 12-3 lead in at the half. The Warriors stepped up on the defense and offense in the second half holding Pekin to only 6 points and scoring 10. "The girls played good defense through the entire game and really got the press working in the second half. We just needed to make a few more free throws down the streatch," commeted Coach Mike Plecker, "we only made 3 or 4 but we must have attempted about twenty." The Warriors gave a good effort to make the come back win but missed opportunities in the fourth quarter left them short.
Leading scorers for Van Buren were Courtney Hervey with 5, Jenna Thornburg had 3, Allison Dickinson and Sarah Frey each added 2, and Jami Nelson had one.
Next up for the Warriors is Cardinal in Eldon an Thursday, November 19 at 4:30 followed by WACO at home on November 23.
