Roadrunners Defeat Indians
December 4, 2013STATE FAIR COMMUNITY COLLEGE
The Roadrunners opened their portion of the Stone Laser Imaging Classic Nov. 15 with a 102-88 victory over the McCook Community College Indians from McCook, Neb. The victory snapped a two-game losing skid for SFCC.
Sophomore guard Kevin Punter began the scoring for SFCC with a pair of three-point shots. The Roadrunners (4-2) found themselves down 28-18 in the first half, but chipped away at the deficit and took a 44-40 lead to the locker room at halftime.
“Rebounding and defense were key to getting back into the game,” said Roadrunners Head Coach Kevin Thomas. “We were scoring the ball, but we weren’t able to get stops on the defensive end. Our defensive stops were the key to the separation we got in the last 10 minutes of the first half. We made a run on them to get the lead and kept it.”
The Roadrunners outscored the Indians 54-44 in the second half. SFCC shot a blistering 46 percent from beyond the three-point arc to key the victory.
Punter led four Roadrunners in double-figure scoring with 27 points, including four of seven from beyond the three-point arc. Sophomore wing Ben Denbow came off the bench for SFCC to score 17 points. Denbow knocked down five three-point shots. Sophomore guard Joseph Thomasson added 13 points and tied for the team lead in assists with six. Sophomore guard DeRon Hill registered a double double with 11 points and a team-high 12 rebounds and dished out six assists. Hill led the team in steals with three. Sophomore center Isaac Freeman led the team in blocked shots with three.
“Marcus Mondaine had seven rebounds off the bench,” said Thomas. “Kevin Punter had a great game again. DeRon Hill had a double double and six assists, which is awesome. A lot of players contributed to a great game.”
